What you'll learn

Six things about Q4 that most restaurants get wrong

Each one comes with the number behind it, computed for every restaurant separately so the busiest venues don't drown out the typical partner.

−41%01

When the quiet months really are

October and November are the two weakest months of the dining year, and December is barely above average. Which month is strongest may surprise you.

17 days02

Exactly which days carry December

81% of a restaurant's December bookings land in the back half of the month. The report maps the season day by day, including the dates in January that outrank Christmas.

56%03

How late festive diners decide

More than half of Christmas and New Year bookings are made on the day itself. See how that compares with Valentine's Day, the busiest date of the year.

Who walks in, and when

December tables are bigger and later, and the week spreads out. Couples give way to groups, Tuesdays fill up, and the kitchen stays open past 9pm.

Where December revenue leaks

A third of December booking requests expire before anyone confirms them. The report shows how big the leak is, and what deposits do to cancellations at the same restaurants.

60%06

How diners find you, and whether they come back

Instagram sends most online bookers; a restaurant's own website sends almost none. Plus how many first-time December diners become regulars.

The first two weeks of December run under two thirds of an average day

Demand climbs from 17 December, peaks on Christmas Eve, and peaks again on 28 December before New Year's Eve. Nine more charts like this one are inside.

The data

Real bookings, not a survey

Every figure comes from Dinesurf reservation records at claimed Nigerian restaurants, for reservation dates from 19 September 2021 to 18 September 2026. That covers four full fourth quarters, 2022 to 2025. Online bookings and the walk-ins, calls and WhatsApp bookings restaurants entered themselves are both counted.

No restaurant is named or can be singled out. Each figure is computed for every restaurant separately, then summarised so each restaurant counts equally, and a figure appears only when at least 5 restaurants contribute to it. Diners are counted, never identified.

Dinesurf is the growth infrastructure for hospitality brands. Restaurants take reservations and orders through it, run their guestbook and CRM on it, and bring guests back with SMS, WhatsApp and email campaigns. More than 150,000 covers have been booked through it across 7 countries.
